Changing Games: Civic Education on Democracy and Governance

The goal of the project was the promotion of a peaceful Democratic practice in which every Nigerian – women and men – fully participate.

It aimed at:

  • providing civic education to both the electorate and the elected political leaders on the practice of participatory governance.
  • promoting good governance through engaging people in power to include women and the youth in both the political and development processes after the elections of April 2003.

The key approaches to achieving the above objectives were capacity building through training of CBOs and women’s groups. We also used Theatre for Development (TFD) for communicating key concerns to authority structures at both community and local government levels.

Outcomes/Achievements

The gains from this training were: the training of CBOs in the understanding of the principles of democracy and of strategies of using drama to talk to authority; the other was the interaction with Local Government chairpersons and officials on their responsibilities as duty bearers. Thirdly, a network of CBOs has emerged in which groups are talking across LGAs and interests. In the process of such interactions they are beginning to find ways of synergising for collective action and impact.
