Communication for Life: Talking AIDS

This was a project of public enlightenment on AIDS conducted in three states namely, Benue, Jigawa and Kaduna. The main concern was to bring people in the different workshop locations to understand HIV/AIDS: its symptoms, precautions and care for sufferers. The focus of the interactive drama in all locations was to influence and encourage attitude change towards sexual practices, encourage the use of condoms as one of the safe sex methods. In the immediate and short-term period, NPTA was bringing into public space the private actions by individuals which have public implications. In the long run, we were interested in how the education would become an ongoing exercise in order for impact to be solidified beyond the immediate euphoria of our presence in the locations. This was followed up with another three-year grant to do public enlightenment workshops with commercial sex workers in Adamawa, Benue and Plateau States.

Outcomes/Achievements

This was still the early days in communicating issues on HIV/AIDS. In spite of the resistance and denial of HIV/AIDS from various sectors in society, the project was able to raise awareness on the disease among the public in the various states where it was conducted.
