Practicing Democracy: Promoting Transparency and Accountability in Governance in Nigeria
This is a project by NPTA - TFDC focusing on the promotion of good governance, especially transparency and accountability, under the title ‘Practicing Democracy.’ This project builds on the Changing Games project undertaken previously. Our own reading of the prevailing circumstance of violence, insecurity and destruction of lives and property that are taking place in the name of religion has a political frame. It is clear that both politicians and governance have failed to work for the poor.
Therefore, the project aims to work with the three interrelated levels of democratic practice (civil society, the electorate and the elected) together for an accountable and transparent system to operate instead of the present disconnects and deficits that seem to hinder the development of sound checks and balances between the ‘demand side’ of the democratic spectrum (the electorate) and the ‘supply side’ (the elected officials).

Outcomes/Achievements
The Organization has completed the activities of training and field work in all five states. The stories we heard point to:
- Democracy is failing because of the tradition of impunity;
- The ordinary Nigerians still do not have enough voice in political and development decisions;
- Women are still at the fringes.
In the activities, civil society with whom NPTA - TFDC has engaged, put together messages that would help promote the entrenchment of the practice of transparency and accountability so that Nigeria’s democracy can be deepened.
